Geheimtipp: Do Not Go There… If You Are on a Diet. You Have Been Warned.
Right in the middle of the center of Leipzig you’ll find a lovely café with most of your heart and stomach might desire.
First off, I have a weakness for Leipzig. I love the city, once hard to get to when Germany was separated in two, the free west and the unfree east. And it helps that it was one of the first romantic weekends I had with the lovely woman that I have been married to for more than ten years (and no, she is not looking over my shoulder right now).
After Leipzig became part of a united Germany it was also for a time a place where artists flocked. It was cheap and cool. Cheap not so much anymore. But it’s still a lovely city. And if you should decide to pass by (it’s just 190 km from Berlin) or settle, there’s one café I would recommend.

It’s the Café Kandler an der Thomaskirche. As the name says it’s right across from St. Thomas Church, where the Richard Wagner, the composer was baptized (horrible person, wonderful music).
The café spans two floors with relaxed air about it. And it’s one of my favorites. You can – as the rest of the tourists – try out the Bachtaler. I personally would rather go for a slice of one of the cakes. The coffee is really good too and you should have some 80 different tees to choose from (if you are so inclined).
Right across from St. Nicholaus Church, where the fantastic composer Johan Sebastian Bach first let the world hear his St John Passion, you’ll find another Café Kandler also with a relaxed atmosphere and good cakes.
My favorite is the first one to be sure. It’s just nice. And no, I don’t get paid to recommend any of these. I mention what I have liked. And should you use this in you travels here, I would be so pleased to hear, what you thought of it.
